Part 1: Calculate the probable Early Speed of a race

This should always be the starting point for your analysis of the past runs of horses entered for a coming race - you need to know how fast or how slow the leaders will go in the early stages of the race.

Part 2: Identify horses that can compete at the expected Early Speed

Our Early Speed ratings for races are based on the leaders' speed over the early sections. What each horse is required to do in that portion of the race determines how much energy it has for a finishing effort. Knowing the Early Speed demands on the horses we can use the records of what they did in similar past races to forecast which ones will have the energy and stamina to be there at the finish.

Part 3: Culling the list of contenders

You now will have eliminated quite a few horses and have most of the remaining contenders ranked in order of their total-speed ratings. These rankings alone often identify many winners and place-getters, though we have done only about 85% of the analysis needed to fully handicap the race. The remaining 15% involves considerations such as the sort of trip each horse will have; how fit and ready each horse is; and whether a track bias is likely and how it will affect each horse.
